PFIKC NEWS

PARTY FRIENDS' LITTLE ADVENTURE AROUND TOWN ON 1 APRIL 2007

A total of 40 children assembled at Level 2 of KL Sentral station at about 9.30am on Sunday 1 April 2007.

The young adventurers in bright yellow Party Friends' Tshirts were eager to begin their journey around town on foot, LRT, a Fire Truck and Monorail!

The children were divided into five teams: BUSY BEES, GOLDEN EAGLES, FLYING FOXES, FIERY DRAGONS AND FEARLESS TIGERS.

The safety and security of the children throughout the journey were well planned and maintained by our Safety Consultant i.e. the   Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA).  Each team was accompanied by 2 MVFRA personnel and 2 Party Friends' crew.

The children were required to complete assignments for each section of the journey with emphasis on teamwork, discipline and caring for each member in the team.

At 10am sharp, the kids were given their first envelope containing their first task and some pocket money too.  They soon discovered that the pocket money was not in RINGGIT MALAYSIA thus, they scrambled to look for a money changer in order to proceed with the race as they were required to purchase tickets and buy specific items.

The heavy rain did not stop the children from completing their assignments.  Infact, the rain had "spiced up" the adventure.  The children had to conduct an "emergency" meeting to decide on what they should do to keep themselves dry before proceeding to the next stage of the journey. The children had many creative ideas on how the team's pocket money should be spent for this purpose.  We realised that the kids were pretty thrifty when spending the team's pocket money.  Most of the teams bought two big umbrellas and some raincoats.  However, Fearless Tigers decided to save up by buying only 1 big umbrella.  Sadly, we had to "apprehend" them and they were not allowed to leave Pasar Seni station unless everyone had enough cover to venture into part of Petaling Street.  Working well under pressure, the Fearless Tigers were finally given permission to proceed when they showed that they had 3 smaller umbrellas, purchased at RM5/each at the corner of the station.  Now we know that people in KL are very enterprising as an "umbrella stall" can suddenly appear when there is a downpour!

The scene at Jalan Hang Lekir was very "bright" with "yellow" kids moving around while making new discoveries.

After the adventure at Petaling Street, the kids went back to Pasar Seni Station to board the LRT to Masjid Jamek Station. The last team to get on the platform was FLYING FOXES. This was because some of the Flying Foxes could not decide if they wanted the toilet break but after some Flying Foxes returned from the toilet, a few others confirmed that they indeed needed to go for the break!  This caused the Busy Bees to sting! Fearless Tigers to Roar! Fiery Dragons to breath out Fire and Golden Eagles to Soar as they had missed an earlier train to Masjid Jamek!

From Masjid Jamek, the kids had a 10min walk to TM Muzium.  We found out that the FIERY DRAGONS were always ready to replenish lost energy by having quick "picnics".
This is probably because the Party Friends' Little Chefs' Principal, Chef Azmir was accompanying the team! They wanted to set up their picnic spot just outside the Masjid Jamek station but had to abandon the idea as everyone else had proceeded to TM Muzium.

The kids were welcomed by friendly TM Muzium personnel who allowed us to use the hall to rest and have our little picnic.  The TIGER biscuits, muffins, apples, juices and water that the crew had been lugging around for the children appreared to be very delicious after 90min of adventure! One person from each team were asked to "collect" cocktail sausages for their team members.  It was really nice to see the children carefully carrying the sausages back to their friends and sharing all the food together.  Most of them returned to the front to get more food for the team!

The children were given secret codes to break during the little picnic.  The secret codes were required for their next assignment in KL Tower!

After the picnic, the kids proceeded to visit the museum.  It was interesting to learn how telecommunications evolved throughout the years.  The kids were amused to see how big the first mobile phone was!

The weather cleared up while we were at TM Muzium.  The kids thanked the personnel of TM Muzium for their hospitality and souvenirs that they had provided for the children.

The children were very excited to know that they will be ferried to KL Tower in a fire truck.  The first team that got on the fire truck was the Busy Bees.

After everyone arrived at the ticket counter of KL Tower, each team had to fork out money for the tickets.  Each child was given paper binoculars before entering the lift that would bring them right up to the top!

After viewing KL from the tower and scouring for answers to the final question of the adventure, the kids took the lift down.

The final and gruelling leg of the adventure i.e. going through the Nature Path to Bukit Nanas Monorail Station. The kids enjoyed the mini suspension bridge but after a while some started grumbling...are we there yet... while others decided to save their energy and just focus on the steps going down.  A few tourists that we met along the way, were happy to meet the Young Adventurers.

The children were thrilled to see the Bukit Nanas monorail station.  Despite having to buy umbrellas and raincoats, the children still had money left to buy the last ticket for the day i.e. to Bukit Bintang Monorail Station. The officer in charge at the station were ready to offer assistance to the children but after a few trips on the LRT, the kids were pretty good at purchasing their own tickets.

Most of the children had not been on the monorail.  It was a nice experience especially knowing that they will reach the finishing point soon. There were busy murmurs on how they should do their winning cheers!

Each team walked quickly through LOT 10 and proudly walked towards IZZI Restaurant where excited parents cheered them as they walked into the restaurant.

The Young Adventurers achieved a great feat on 1 April 2007.  Despite the heavy rain which set the entire troup about 90min off schedule, they went through the entire journey with maturity and confidence. They were thrifty in spending their pocket money, they shared and worked as a team although some had never met each other.

Congratulations to all the teams! You were great. The Busy Bees were awarded the Best Team as they were really Busy Bees. They followed instructions carefully and were always the first team to arrive at every station. Spirits were high in this team and they were very chatty throughout the journey!

Golden Eagles were very organized throughout the journey with each person having a specific role i.e. treasurer etc.  However, they missed out on an important question at KL Tower and did not have a chance to purchase the jasmine garland at Petaling Street.  They were indeed a determined group of kids as they wanted to turn back and look for the jasmine garland.  Sadly, they were "apprehended" as the other teams had already completed their assignments at Petaling Street and ready to head back to Pasar Seni Station. Credit must be given to them as although the team had two eagles who had just recovered from cough and fever and another eagle who had a quick visit inside MVFRA's ambulance, they were there for each other and helped each other through!

Fiery Dragons were very systematic in refuelling their energy.  They were always seen to be munching away.  They even tried to set up camp in front of Masjid Jamek station but was stopped by our safety personnel!  A really funny place for a picnic but they still managed to grab a quick bite! Will be a great team in an F1 race as they refuel really fast!

Flying Foxes were also a chatty group.  The youngest in the group was Claire.  However, she did a tremendous job on that day and the team mates were really good in caring for her. They were very thrifty in spending but unfortunately they missed the first item to buy i.e. bangles as they felt that the bangles were too costly!  It was really unfortunate that they did not manage to buy the right flower at Petaling Street.  They bought a nice flower but not a rose or Anthurium Hawaii as stipulated in the assignment sheet.  Maybe they wanted to buy a cheaper flower?

Fearless Tigers were an all boys team. They were really competitive from the start.  The drive to succeed made them a little bit impatient at times. The assignment of counting Dragons at the Temple in Petaling Street were really amusing as this team had almost three times more dragons as compared to the other teams!

Once again, congratulations children for taking up the challenge to go on an adventure around town.  Simple tasks of waiting for public transportation, walking, waiting for the entire group to arrive and a little hardship i.e. rain may not be so simple for 6 to 13 year olds but they made it!

Hope to see you again in the next adventure....We also wish to thank the management of KL Sentral station, PUTRA LRT, Monorail, TM Muzium and KL Tower for their assistance. Thank you to all Party Friends' crew who took great care of the kids and MVFRA crew for doing a great job in maintaining safety and security of the children throughout the journey.

Warmest Regards,

ELLENE AHMAD

More past events....

Dear Members,

We wish to thank all members who attended the PARTY FRIENDS' HAUNTED TREEHOUSE YEAR END PARTY. It was indeed a spooky party with Count Dracula as the Guest of Honour.

It was a cool breezy night. The dining area was lighted with candles and there was a long black cloth covering the buffet table.  There were "frogs", "blood stains" and a "finger in a jar of blood" on the buffet table!

Just as the lights went off, we heard 3 knocks on the door of the Treehouse.  Everyone stood still. Some even held their breath as our party crew slowly opened the door.  We saw this huge figure at the door........Ahhhhhhhhh! It was Count Dracula!

We really had a good time in 2006.  A special thanks to parents and members who have taken part in many of our events. The Nature Ranger camps in May and August 2006 were loads of fun.

The Family Gathering at Cathay Cineleisure on 20 August 2006 as well as the Little Chefs Roadshow at the Curve received positive feedbacks.

PARTY FRIENDS also provided fun DeepaRaya activities at the Great Eastern Mall in Jalan Ampang on 30 September 2006, 7th and 14th October 2006.  We wish to thank members who joined us for the "bake your own cookies" session.  Thanks to Great Eastern Mall and also to Delifrance for providing the oven.

The fun baking session was featured in the Oriental Daily News.

More exciting activities coming up this year.

NATURE RANGER CAMP NEWS

TAMAN RIMBA AMPANG: Members of the PARTY FRIENDS' INTELLI KIDS CLUB (PFIKC) had a terrific time at the Nature Ranger Camp III on 28 May 2006. A total of 60 PFIKC members registered for the camp.  The kids were divided into 8 teams named after characters from "Lion King".

The Young Rangers left the Party Friends' Treehouse at about 9.05am in two coaches. Waiting at Taman Rimba Ampang were the facilitators from the Malaysian Volunteer Fire Rescue Association (MVFRA).

Upon arrival, the Young Rangers were immediately kept busy.  They had to set up their tents to place their belongings.  They were then taught to cross the stream by huddling in groups of three and keeping each other afloat.  Following the dip in the water, the kids had to keep themselves warm with various exercises.

The Young Rangers soon realised that they had to work as a team to get things done.  The best way was to have fun with new friends.
Although some kids had never met each other before the camp, they immediately bonded through the camping  activities.

Each team had to start up their own campfire to keep themselves warm and they had to prepare their own lunch (little did they know that CHEF AZMIR , the Little Chef Programme's celebrity chef was invited to the camp and he had prepared his delicious nasi lemak for everyone!!)

Two teams had to boil eggs using bamboo.  Two other teams had to learn to clean fish and prepare "ikan bakar". Some kids insisted that the fishes were still alive! There were also teams that were given tasks to bbq marshmallows, cocktail sausages and chicken.  The girls from Team Nala prepared bbq corn.

After the hard work, we finally announced that Chef Azmir had brought nasi lemak for everyone.  The aroma of nasi lemak on banana leaves was simply alluring.
It was fun to watch the kids exchanging food. The marshmallows quickly "disappeared" before we took out the nasi lemak!

With delicious bbq sauce to go with the chicken as well as apples and red juicy watermelon after lunch, this camp was obviously not to be a scene for jungle survival movies!

A scavenger hunt after lunch got the kids back on their feet.  They had to look for petai, bunga kantan, daun kunyit (tumeric leaves), serai (lemon grass), ginger etc. Quite a number of kids had never heard or seen the items which were mentioned.  However, they did well in bringing back all the items!

The kids were back splashing in the stream to have a go at the bamboo raft, crossing the stream with a rope etc.  They were also taught to waterproof matches and the matches were tested after they had crossed the stream with the waterproofed matches.

At about 1.30pm, dark clouds were suddenly hovering over us. The kids did not realise the sudden change of weather as they were having a whale of a time. However, everyone above 12years (that's us of course) were worried as it had rained almost every day prior to the camp. We knew we had to execute our Emergency Plan if the dark clouds didn't go away. The coaches were brought into the camp site in case of a downpour. The children looked worried when they saw the coaches being driven in.  Do we have to go home now?

Thankfully, the clouds went away. We were glad that we didn't have to put an abrupt end to a wonderful camping trip.

The kids continued to learn the essential jungle survival skills such as preparing a jungle torch and making ladders using ropes.

As a grand finale, the Capt announced that the teams would have to compete in a Pirate's War.  The team leader had to protect the team's treasure map from getting wet.  The teams had to attack each other using water bombs!

It was really hilarious to see team leaders being transformed into a pirate with an eye patch! Their boats also had the "Pirate's Flag" . Teamwork was clearly visible as everyone was trying to protect their Pirate Leader who had to ensure that the treasure map remained dry. Water bombs were flying everywhere!!Not just from the kids but also among the facilitators who were adamant in ensuring that the teams under their care were well protected."War" strategies were also put into place by their facilitators.

At 3.15pm the Pirate War ended. ALL treasure maps were soaked and there were indeed lots of laughs! The kids had to clean themselves up and change into their dry clothes. Sadly, they had to take down their tents and clean up the place, marking an end to a fun outing.

The Capt gave away bandanas to everyone and we sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Danesh Nanoo and Ong Chun Chieh who celebrated their birthdays on that day, complete with a "water pouring ritual".

At 4pm, we said our goodbyes to the MVFRA facilitators (some kids really thought that the facilitators would continue to live in the jungle) and we headed back to Party Friends Treehouse.  Suprisingly, some kids did not seem to be tired at all as we continued to play games in the coach.  But some dozed off as soon as the coach started to move.

We wish to thank all parents for letting their children spend the time with us and other PFKIC members.  We had a wonderful time and had as much fun as the kids.  A big thank you to MVFRA for their professionalism.  It is a difficult task to maintain discipline and ensure safety while having lots of fun but WE did it!

Also a big thank you to the Little Chefs' team i.e. Chef Azmir, Juls and Janet from Jigsaw Productions for taking time off to be with us.

The Nature Ranger Camp footage was aired on MALAYSIA HARI INI, TV3 on 29 May 2006.  A special write up and photos of the camp were published in DIDIK, educational supplement of BERITA HARIAN/NST on 13 June 2006.

Please email stories that your kids had told you about the camp.  We would love to hear from them because great ideas for successful kids' programmes come from kids themselves.

Warmest Regards,

ELLENE AHMAD
